I've neglected this blog, as well as practicing the guitar.

I've been struggling emotionally/mentally. Returning to my childhood home has made me homesick for the life that my husband and I were made to leave behind. We're both trying to navigate the trauma of family, but there have been more sad days than steady. Peace is a rare treat.

I have to remind myself to dust off the Gio, guilty for making the purchase at all. The guitar is staying - I hope to pick it up again in the future, when the bitter taste of this experience is behind me. My focus is on my artwork and getting paid for it. While I'm unemployed, the majority of my time will be spent building a personal and commission portfolio.

I'd like to keep writing in Melo Draco, so I think I'll shift the blog's focus from music/guitar to life in general.

Poor Eddie

After a long drive across the States, my husband and I are settling into a temporary home. I hadn't touched the Gio during the journey, but when we arrived I got to show my dad the guitar. We played together the next morning (well, *he* played - I fought against my lack of flexibility just to play what notes I remembered). Dad recited a funny "poem" to help me remember the name of the strings - E, A, D, G, B, E.

Eddie Ate Dynamite.
Good-Bye, Eddie.

Dad also set me up with a stand, strap, and an Orange amplifier. :)

I sat down and fiddled for a few minutes just before writing this entry. A quick entry, but hopefully I'll have more progress to share by the next one!

The Gio arrived at nearly 9 PM on the 13th. I admired it, and my husband examined it. We were plucking strings for a while into the night.

My crash course on what chords even are extended into the next day, and I managed to commit A, E, and D to memory. Holy cow, do I lack dexterity in my fingers! I pictured the scene from Happy Gilmore when the sweet old lady complains to Hal, "My fingers hurt." Now I'm looking to memorize C, G, and F.

We stopped by a Music Go Round yesterday afternoon. It was a lovely little music store that I hadn't heard of before. I wish my dad could have been there to test out the guitars. We wandered around the selection, and I only spotted one left-handed oriented guitar among the whole floor inventory. My husband found a bass guitar to fiddle with. We ended up buying a nice gig bag for the Gio.

As I'm writing this, I realize how grateful I am to be learning how to play with my husband's support. He has a strong bond with music and music-making, and just last night he was sharing sounds in songs that he really likes, including the ghostly chorus in the background of the song Your Idol by the Saja Boys.

My only experience with a musical instrument was when I took private drum lessons in high school. Admittedly, I'd consider myself a terrible student, but it was fun for a while. I dropped out of the band elective class when the teacher announced a Disneyland trip, and I eventually stopped attending lessons.

My dad's side of the family was musical. We'd gather at my Nana and Papa's ranch, and aunties and uncles would set up jam sessions, playing instruments and singing. Meanwhile, I'd be outside playing swords and dragons with my cousin. I never developed an ear for music, and I never really had any desire to learn how to play an instrument (besides dabbling in drums), and instead would turn to the visual arts as my creative outlet.

Then, many years later, moved away from home, driving the long stretch of road between where my husband and I lived and Bismarck, I mentioned to my husband that it would be fun to learn to play guitar just so that I could play with my dad. The thought stuck around. My husband remained supportive of the interest (he has played instruments in the past, including my poor abandoned drum kit that he pounded metalhead blast beats into).

Today, I am waiting for a used left-handed Ibanez GRG20Z to arrive. I have no idea what anything means. I just purchased the cheapest-at-the-time left-handed guitar I could find online. I suppose I could have learned right-handed, but then I think back and wonder if drums and rhythm would have made more sense if I oriented them the other way around.
